4/14/11 LAST SPH HAPPY HOUR - FRIDAY 4:30-7 PM - Gandy Dancer

4/11/11 Final Happy Hour! Friday: 4:30-7 PM @ Gandy Dancer
4/7/11 SPH Happy Hour - Grange - 5-7 PM TODAY 4/7/11
Hi SPHers!
As expected, there is a Happy Hour email waiting in your inbox at around an unreasonable hour on Thursday morning. It is also a nice day out today and the temperatures will continue its upward trajectory and skyrocket towards the 70s over the next few days!!!! Spring is coming! I say this with the enthusiasm of a Californian returning to habitable temperatures, which, I assure you, is plentiful.
So, since it's going to be the last Thursday Happy Hour, let's try somewhere a bit more special. Let's go with the Grange. See, this place is interesting because it's a restaurant that's meant for Ann Arbor. It goes for food that's locally grown and raised, gathered and somehow makes it to your table. It's on the pricier side of things, but it doesn't steal your money and slap you upside in the head with poor food. So the food is delish and the cocktails excellent. It's a nice place that's upstairs that gives it a special feel, kinda like what you would get if you had a bar inside of a clean attic. Though, that last part isn't exactly Ann Arbor, but we'll take it.
Now that I've got you interested in ingesting strangely named foods and spirits, do come out for a few hours to chill out at the Grange. Yah, strangely named foods, check the menu for yourself; I had to ask the waiter to decipher a few of them.

4/14/11 LAST SPH HAPPY HOUR - FRIDAY 4:30-7 PM - Gandy Dancer
Hi SPHers!!!
Thus begins my final SPH Happy Hour email for the year, and perhaps forever. I can only assume the upcoming social chair or some other self-designated Happy Hour Email person will be writing future ones. It's been a fun year of awesomeness. It's been great to meet new people and make new friends and deepen friendships over the year. I've put together the Happy Hour emails over the past year into the Archives here: http://sphhappyhour.blogspot. com/p/archives-2010-2011.html
Now you can enjoy all the great moments we've shared in the Inbox all in one place! For the low price of $0.00499, you can enjoy such great hits as: Rick's American Cafe: Casablanca v. Ann Arbor; You don't mess with Panda; Kangaroo kicking man into water; Prezi with satisfaction survey; and many more!
For a limited time only, you will also get a free Prezi presentation! I actually do recommend you watch/click through it. This keeps the email short and sweet. Oh yes, you should have headphones/earphones for this.
But yah, to reiterate some key points:
Friday: 4:30-7 PM
Gandy Dancer
401 Depot Street
Gandy Dancer
401 Depot Street
Ann Arbor, MI 48104
Libations:
$5 Martinis & Cocktails
$4 Wines & Premium Drafts
$3 Well Cocktails & Domestic Drafts
Appetizers including:
$3 Portobello Mushroom Fries and Bruschetta
$4 Batter Dipped Cod Fingers and Fried Mozzarella
$5 Slider Burgers, Steamed Mussels, Seared Tuna Sashimi
You will love the trains rumbling by and the wonderful company. The drinks are delicious and the food marvelous. If you're feeling luxurious, you can even order dinner! I strongly recommend the Buschetta on the appetizer menu and please do try to resist the urge of wanting to lick the plate.
I think the plan is probably eventually carry the night out to end up at Rick's, Necto, or Rush St. As for the hours between 7 and party appropriate time, that's up for grabs, up to everyone; it's graduation party time for a lil' less than half of you, so you all need to come out! Yah, remember that cute furry creature from before? Remember yourself promising yourself that you'll make it out to the Happy Hour? Yah, promises broken means the cute furry creature gets eaten by a monster in the mythical world. And I like cute furry creatures. So that would make me sad. =(

Entirely my own work, what are you talking about? Oh, ok, yah, fine.

SPHers,
This is it! The last official Happy Hour of the year! To go out in style, some of us have decided to class it up a bit and head to the Gandy Dancer. This beautiful restaurant resides in the former Ann Arbor Train Station. Normally far too expensive for a grad student to eat or imbibe at, the happy hour prices are ridiculously reasonable. Come to the last happy hour at this MUST-SEE restaurant with all of your friends.

$5 Martinis

Their words, not mine. ARTISINAL cocktails. Even spellcheck tells me that's not a word. But with a quick Google search:
"Artisinal: Within the context of resource use, the term is used to define small-scale resource users or harvesters (e.g. fishermen) who use or harvest the resource mainly for household consumption but also sell the surplus for commercial gain."(2)
I want to say that the South African environmentalists are just making up new words 'cause the Merriam-Webster Dictionary doesn't think it's a word either, then again, this might just be typical of what Ann Arbor does anyway...
And to those of you that promised making it to one of the Happy Hours. This is the second to the last one. You don't want to break a promise, 'cause a cute and cuddly furry animal will get eaten by a monster in some made-up land.
The next and LAST Happy Hour of the 2010-2011 season will be on Friday next week, stay tuned.
Hope to see you all out!

3/31/11 SPH Happy Hour - Blue Tractor -- 4-8 PM - FRIDAY (4/1)
Hi SPHers!
I am writing this during broad daylight, so hopefully the post-2AM haze will not affect the quality of this email.* Granted, broad daylight is really just a hazy gray day in Ann Arbor with no sunshine. But behold! tomorrow, we will have high/lows of 49/32 with PM showers and the hottest day of the week(1).
Before I forget, awesome turnout at the PHSA Semiformal and pre-party! Nice to meet new people there, too! Now you're obligated to come out to happy hours 'cause there's a face to the name! ;)
We are kicking off April quite appropriately with showers, because after the December-March #Ü¢<!Πζ §≠!†-storms comes April Showers to deliver May Flowers. Evidently, it's also April Fool's Day, so I expect you all do a little something to bring out the dormant little prankster in all of us and share the story with us over the course of the night! And probably it's also nature's own cruel practical joke, since it's snowing in April on Saturday. So, ALL the more reason to drown your seemingly neverending winter sorrows in fermented barley juice with amazing company!
BLUE TRACTOR (it's probably a blue hyperlink anyway)
4 - 8 PM FRIDAY 4/1/11
Happy Hour 3 - 6 PM
1/2 off Drafts
$1 off appetizers(2)
So I hear food is supposedly good here but if all else fails, we can walk next door to Habana for their happyhour with appetizers and drinks.
That guy who writes those emails,

3/24/11 SPH Happy Hour - Arbor Brewing Company - 6-10 PM Today
Hi SPHers (come to ABC, go to semiformal),
Those of you that felt like they were missing a part of their life last week, it's not because I sent it to the wrong email address during a drunken stupor on St. Patty's day or celebrating too hard for the Med Student match day that I lost track of the Happy Hour that normally occurs on alternate Friday's. Nor did you accidentally delete the email in your own post-St. Patty's day madness. The email never existed. In truth, I was being considerate to the overall hepatic health of ethanol consumers after an annual celebration of Irish pride and drinking until you turn green (or in my case, extra red), so Friday Happy Hour was called off and the email was never written. (come to ABC, go to semiformal)
But fear not, for today is the day that things regain some of their routine nature in spite of the weather refusing to become spring. Usually the opening of Dominick's (3/14) signals the coming of Spring or even the Spring Equinox (3/20), but we end up getting an ice storm scare instead. So, in honor of the everlasting winter and hopes of the coming of Spring with the lengthening daylight hours, let's try ABC again. (come to ABC, go to semiformal)
Let's shoot for 6 PM instead of the usual 4 PM otherwise we'll be spending way too many daylight hours inside of a dark and dank but respectable establishment. You know, just for appearances (come to ABC, go to semiformal).
Oh yes, before I continue to ramble on in my post-2-AM haze:
ARBOR BREWING COMPANY (as easy as ABC and 123)
114 East Washington
Ann Arbor, MI 48104
6 - 10 PM (TODAY!! THURSDAY the 24th!!!)
Happy Hour specials 6-7 PM
"$1-3 off beer (progressive discount based on glass size)
Some sort of discount on Wine & Well Drinks
Darts & Shuffleboard, assuming we can wrestle it away from all the other regular patrons, we'll try anyway. ;)"(1)
If you'll remember when we were at Arbor Brewing Company, we found no shuffleboard or darts access (2). But this time, there is no Beer Tasting festival on their schedule and Thursday has no private events (3). So, we MUST WRESTLE SHUFFLEBOARD AWAY. (come to ABC, go to semiformal)
Before I let you go, since I'm assuming you even read this much:
PHSA Semi-formal!!!!!!!
GOOOOOO!!!!!
I mean it.
I mean, $5 pre-party with unlimited drinks (limited by your 2 liter stomach and blood alcohol levels) and $18 dollar awesomeness at a fancy ballroom with the people you love. What more could you want? It's obviously not going to be cheaper, but if you get a special someone (Uncle Sam) to pay for you, you're all set!
But seriously, come to ABC and go to Semi-formal. Come to ABC, go to semi-formal. Rinse and repeat. In case if subliminal messaging didn't work.
Details:
Preparty (weather permitting, on my big porch; most likely, Matt's place)
God only knows when people start pre-partying (probably 7 PM?)
Pendleton Room - Michigan Union 8:30 PM - 1:30 AM
March 26, 2011 Saturday
$20 single people; $36 double people
(come to ABC, go to semiformal)

3/10/11 SPH Happy Hour - Mélange Bistro - Thursday 4:30-8 PM
Hi SPHers,
Well, now that it's actually warming up but probably not as warm as it was that one memorable tease of high 50s a few weeks back. You're all probably missing the usual weekly Happy Hour emails with the 2 week hiatus with Spring Break in full swing given the panics and demanding requests when they don't get sent out. It seems to me that people don't like South U very much with the abysmal turnout 2 weeks ago at Charley's, I'm moving it back to Main St.
So this is a place that we tear up after Conor's a few weeks before. This is Mélange with an accent over the first e, it's sophisticated like that. I'm going to experiment with the time a bit, let's shoot for 4:30 since I'm usually the only one there until 4:30 or so (thank you free wifi and cable TV). Clearly, the whole it's 5 PM in Nova Scotia just doesn't cut it anymore, so let's compromise with half an hour and see if that works because I can't find a half-hour timezone like Newfoundland timezone in between Eastern and Atlantic timezones. (Did you know that timezones were created by a Canadian? Google and Wikipedia complete me at 2 in the morning.)
Mélange
Thursday, March 10
4:30 - 8 PM
Happy Hour 4 - 6 PM
Half off Appetizers & Wines by the Glass
(Translation: Drink and eat as much as possible before the price rises 100% to $$$)
http://www.melangebistro.com/In other news, we have eyewitness accounts of a student wearing a Michigan Biostatistics t-shirt sighted on Lincoln Blvd, Miami Beach, FL (1). So we have confirmation that they exist and go out to party in places like South Beach, but just not with the rest of us SPHers, what's up with that? Consider your entire department called out. Feel free to probe your fellow classmates for information. ;)
But yah, it's been like 3 long weeks since we've celebrated life together, isn't that long enough? I mean, we only have 6 or 7 Happy Hours left and those of you that have promised yourself that you would come out to see the world of Ann Arbor bars and restaurants and meet amazing people, capri diem! I mean, you've all either trained or rehabbed your liver over spring break for this day, right?
Drink responsibly?

Hi SPHers,
The long awaited email is now here. Today was the Chinese Lantern Day (Yuan Xiao Jie) and goes by other names in various East and Southeast Asian cultures and an overall good day. I have personal reasons to be happy as some of you already know. But, it's also the Early Spring Possible Skirt/Shorts Day or maybe that was yesterday in sunny 40+ degree weather. Regardless, that's all the more reason to be happy and to go out! And Friday will be a fairly nice day out during the day with some winds and chillier by night time. Yes yes, weather forecast is now important for happiness purposes 'cause it heralds the end of the cold! But bring a coat anyway, it's still not balmy quite yet, at least, it's not for my thin Southern Californian hide, though my Hawaiian brethren seems to think it's shorts worthy weather here. Guess my hide is that much thinner.
Let's bring it back to an SPH Happy Hour Favorite.
Good Time Charley's
4 PM to 6 PM Specials
(anything after is really fair game, call me if you need to find the pack (number removed), yah, I freely give out my number to total strangers on massive listserves)
$2 22 oz beers, $3.25 pitchers, $3 wells, $5.50 Long Islands, and $1 off pub menu
And....we'll do something to pass the time while we nurse our multiple progressively room-temperature cheap drinks and food then head out to somewhere on Main or what not. OR just be lazy until we decide we need to do something else.
SEGH is having a Reggae Night at LIVE from 9 PM onwards, which is probably worthwhile to check out prior to go BACK to South U if necessary.
Of course, no Happy Hour email is complete without a mention of Rick's. Just for the sake of reference, really. If you still have not been to Rick's, Friday night is a pretty good night to go to experience it in its full glory (whatever that actually means). So, South U is essentially an extension of Rick's with everything in the night pointing towards Rick's as you get more and more delirious and drunk. It is essentially what Undergrads do every weekend, but we are Grad students. Thus, we pretend to not be Undergrads and not risk running into students we GSI for and not wander into Rick's unless with a ton of other Grad students so we don't have to interact with the Undergrads. Because, really, we are just better than the Undergrads now. Moral of the story: strength in numbers and believing = truth. Grad students > Undergrads.
Instead of Liberty, we say Libations! (funner, really)

[Guide on How to write a Happy Hour email]
[insert greeting]
Hey SPHers,
[thank the audience for reading and somehow tie everything back to the Mission, Vision, and Values]
Congratulations on finishing a few papers and midterms and thank you for tuning in to the weekly Happy Hour! I apologize for the lateness of this email (less than 24 hour notice). It's really 'cause I really just enjoy doing my work at late night hours. Well, you know me, my sleeping schedule is designed for going out with you all 'til 2 AM on Thursdays and Fridays. ;) And besides, I'm playing with a new laptop, you know how it is when we get new toys. Some of you have seen this new toy. I assure you, it's awesome. Anyway, back to our Thursday programming; yes, very serious business and I did just use a semicolon.
[introduce content and add in buzzwords and capture attention of audience with interesting or surprising information]
I know we haven't been to South U for some time, we'll change that up for the following week. But this week, we'll stick with Main Street areas for a few things: SPH Happy Hour, Hanging out with Fordies, and Carnarbor with Rossies! (Or this can turn into a Rick's/Blue Lep night.)
I want you to know that I would like you to come out to hang with us, you are NOT obligated to buy or drink anything at all; in fact, drinking and eating out repeatedly may be harmful to your wallet. It's okay to buy the cheapest item on the menu just to sit there and hang with us.
[insert important content and use encouraging tone]

Find out what their special is at the bar, I just ask the bartender.
Upstairs from Goodnight Gracie's is going to be a Brazilian party: Carnarbor!!! So if you tired of the Fordies, we can join the Business Students upstairs.
[oh yes, add some more content, people really like things in trios for some reason]

*Tickets will NOT be sold at the door.
(Read: Business Students are apparently rich enough to charge the $15 and still get more than 100+ people to go out; we, at the SPH Happy Hour, charge you nothing to spend time with your classmates in a social setting)
(shh, I know there's an hour missing from the schedule; just do whatever you want for an hour, I don't think anyone is going to kick us out of anywhere)
[add follow-through and encourage audience to spam my inbox or flood my voicemail immediately and extend superhuman offers of assistance on everything]
Please call me if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions. I will spend my day waiting by my phone. I will be absolutely elated to help you in any way possible. Please email me for anything at all.

See yah all soon!!

Hey SPHers,
Now that everyone has survived the faux blizzard/snow-mageddon-event, I can write this email without fear of inciting some sort of supernatural wrath upon A2 for promoting libations (though, the timing of the snow storm might actually be encouraging more of the sort for this weekend, ie. post-blizzard celebrations). I also have personal and cultural reasons to celebrate extra hard this month as today marks the beginning of a 15 day celebration of the new Lunar year (Rabbits!) with fireworks, firecrackers, red envelopes ($), lanterns, exuberant amounts of food and libations, etc.
So, we are back to our planned schedule (not that we would cancel because of a pitiful storm, here's why).
FRIDAY, Feb 4, 2011
Jolly Pumpkin
4 - 8 PM (and whatever else you wanna do)
311 S Main St
Ann Arbor, MI 48104
Let's meet upstairs for standing and mingling room!
HH Specials:
4-6 PM $1 off drafts, pizza, and appetizers
A bit about Jolly Pumpkin: It's a Michigan establishment, with 3 locations across the state: Dexter, Traverse City, and here in Ann Arbor. They have a selection of their very own tasty brews and their kitchen produces some of the finest foods made from local ingredients. This place has some sick decor with mini decorative skulls hanging from the roof and none of the lamps/lanterns/lighting sources are the same. So, yah, LANTERNS & EXUBERANT AMOUNTS OF FOOD AND LIBATIONS.
If you have the urge to celebrate today's beautiful sunshine and total lack of snow, you can tonight with SEGH (Students Engaged in Global Health, same group as last week's rather successful Goodnight Gracie's fundraising event).
TONIGHT, Feb 3, 2011
5th Quarter
8 PM - 2 AM
210 South 5th Ave
Ann Arbor, MI 48104
Cover is $5 for 21+, $7 for 18-20 (18+ apparently doesn't include 21+)
Quite a few of the grad schools are invited!!
Same deal as before, they're fundraising for trip to Jamaica's rural & underserved region to help cute children, wonderful adults, and wise elderly.
Tiny bit about 5th Quarter: I have trouble placing this on the spectrum of Rick's/Necto to Rush/Melange. I want to say it's somewhere above Scorekeeper's and it's really a clubbing sort of club. I'll let you be the judge of this one, let me know where you think it fits.
I'm glad to see more of the 2nd year HMP and 1st years of Epid, EHS, and HBHE. Hope to see you all out this weekend!
Happy Rabbit Year everyone!! And 恭喜發財! ("hope you get rich!")

Hi SPHers,
I'm considering at the moment to call out a few groups of people that keep saying that they would come out but don't, I'm starting to take it personally. *sad panda* (and You never say no to Panda) Anyway, the SURPRISE for this week is a double feature with organizational collaboration!!
In collaboration with the MHESA Social Chairs and SEGH Fundraising Chairs, we are offering two distinct social and fundraising events associated with the usual SPH Happy Hour that you have learned to love to add to your social calendar! (If you don't know what MHESA and SEGH are or what they do, I have appendices at the end of the email just for you.)
Thursday 1/27 with MHESA to socialize & network
4:30 - 8 PM Conor O'Neil's
8 - 12 AM Melange
12 - 2 AM Melange / Rush St.
Specials:
Conor O'Neil's
4 - 6 PM Half off Appetizers
4 - 7 PM $1.50 off Draft, $1 off all bottled beer & mixed drinks
Melange
10 - 2 AM Live DJ
Friday 1/28 with SEGH to socialize, play games, and support Jamaica Service Trip
5 - 9 PM Goodnight Gracie's Happy Hour ($5 Cover starts at 8 PM)
9 PM - 2 AM Goodnight Gracie's / Live @ PJ's ($5 Cover still applies)
Specials:
Goodnight Gracie's
5 - 9 PM $5 Martinis, $3.50 drafts, and 1/2 off sandwiches
9 - 11 PM $4 Long Islands
All Night $3 Red Stripe
Live @ PJ's
$2 Well drinks 9 - 11 PM
Forecasted FAQs
"Why did we pick these places?" The reason for Conor is so it's more causal and more conducive for chatting and conversations and stuff of that nature and then we move onto Melange for music and dancing and lounging around and decent martinis. Goodnight Gracie's & Live @ PJ's are essentially an one-stop-shop for games, lounge, bar, and club all rolled up in one.
"Why 2 HHs this weekend?" So people don't have excuses for not showing up to one or the other anymore and so I can legitimately go out for 2 nights in a row.
"How do I drag out my lame friends that don't want to go out and meet other people within our school?" You call them out like this: "Those of you in the 2nd year HMP class (with some exceptions), I still didn't see you guys at the Happy Hour despite having changed it to Friday to appease you guys. HBHE and EPID are showing you guys up in the social scene."
"Why should I come out?" Because you never know when you might have this happen to you in the dead of winter in Michigan and 4,000 miles away from wild kangaroos.
Alright, I'm wrapping up this long-winded and well-researched email with the appendices, 'cause some people read 'em?
Appendix I: Organization Names & Mission
MHESA -- Michigan Health Executives Student Association -- they are a student liaison of the American College of Healthcare Executives, their mission is to "[supplement classroom learning with] professional development, fellowship, and service leadership to create well-rounded healthcare professionals"
SEGH -- Students Engaged in Global Health -- they are a student organization within the School of Public Health that "proactively pursue the breadth of global health issues"
SEGH Jamaica Trip -- Hagley Gap Jamaica Project -- Two student led and interdisciplinary (SPH, Medicine, Dentistry, Business, and Engineering) trips are planned for Hagley Gap, Jamaica this year. The trip's purpose in the past has been to 1) test the safety of the water and 2) educate the community about the importance of clean water. Dr. Stuart Batterman of the EHS Department is the faculty sponsor of this project. This year, they will also be joining the Blue Mountain Project to support local health clinic, to scale up, operationalize, and implement their health services in a more equitable and accessible way.
Appendix II: Nightlife Establishments
Conor O'Neil's -- Irish Pub on Main St., what you would expect from an Irish Pub that is slightly more upscale. Somewhat dimly lit, great Irish stouts and beers and whiskey, lots of Irish food, and a good place to have Happy Hours.
Melange -- Martini Bar and Lounge on Main St., a respectable lounge on Main St with both a loud music area with dancing and a live DJ on certain nights and a quieter lounge area for more intimate conversations (ie, less shouting over the music).
Rush St. -- Club named after Rush St. in Chicago, both widely known for "cougars" and loud music. Known hangout for those that don't want to quite head out to Rick's for the night.
Goodnight Gracie's -- Dimly lit lounge, where Speed Dating Happened, it's a respectable lounge with live bands on a regular basis. Games and music and lots of lounging area.
Live @ PJ's -- Club known to be a bit lower on the pecking order of clubs than Rush St but higher than Rick's and Necto. It's a Grad School version of Rick's, if that helps any.
See yah there! Don't worry, no Pandas or Kangaroos will be around. ;)

1/20/11 SPH Happy Hour -- Cafe Habana on FRIDAY - 4 PM until closing?
Hi all,
This email comes later than usual because Happy Hour has been moved to Friday for this weekend! Yah, I hear some grumbling out there but also some happy smiles (audible smiles, I know, uncanny). Anyway, details:
Cafe Habana
211 E. Washington
Ann Arbor, MI 48843
Ann Arbor, MI 48843
Friday, 1/21/2011
4 PM until some ungodly hour (or you end up at Rush St., Blue Lep, Necto, Rick's, etc.)
Please come before 6 so you can get some cheaper libations and/or soft drinks
Downstairs in the basement so there's LOTS of mingling space
Drink Specials
3pm-6pm AND 10pm-12am (so you can have a 4 hr break and start again)
HALF OFF all Draft Beer, $2 OFF Sangria Glass / $7 Off Carafes
HALF OFF all Draft Beer, $2 OFF Sangria Glass / $7 Off Carafes
$2 Off Mojitos, And All Other Drinks Are $1 Off
There is also food special, surprise, surprise! Given the whole restaurant week thing, in case if you haven't gone out at all this week to try out the other places, you can do the one here at Cafe Habana if you can grab a table away from the other patrons. If you go early, it shouldn't even be an issue (ie, 3-5 PM timeframe). Come join us downstairs after you get your dinner!
We might come back to Habana on a Thursday night so we can experience the full glory of Salsa night as well.
Alright, justifications, 'cause everyone wants justifications, I'm sure. "Why is my happy hour being changed? Keep your hands off my Happy Hour!" one might protest. I'll let you digest that one. It's being moved to Friday for this week and every other week so certain populations (I'm looking at you, yah, the one with classes on Friday or late classes on Thursday) can make it to hang out with the rest of us. I know some of the Thursday proponents will be unhappy (based on the survey data), but in an effort of appeasement, we will have them on alternating weeks as a survey participant brilliantly suggested (1). I hope this new schedule doesn't make your heads explode 'cause it's already complicated enough that we change locales every week.
Summary of future SPH happy hour schedule:
This week will be Friday, next week will be Thursday, the following week is Friday, and so on and so forth. Don't worry, I'll send out emails about 24 hrs in advance, so if you feel empty on Wednesday evening without an email, it's probably because the event was moved to Friday as planned.
Oh, there's also a Relay for Life/Birthday Party thing tonight (1320 S. University Ave. Apt #16, $10 cups for drinks) if you absolutely need to do something on Thursday night 'cause we moved this to tomorrow (2). ;)
Special surprise next week, stay tuned.

1/11/11 SPH Happy Hour - Thursday 4-8 PM Arbor Brewing Company
Hi SPHers,
It's that time again, you know it when you read the subject line. I'll get straight to the point. ABC from 4-8:30 PM on Thursday.
Arbor Brewing Company (as easy as ABC)
114 East Washington
Ann Arbor, MI 48104
4 PM - 8 PM (or 'til closing given the games & co.?)
Happy Hour Specials
4 PM - 7 PM
$1-3 off beer (progressive discount based on glass size)
Some sort of discount on Wine & Well Drinks
Darts & Shuffleboard, assuming we can wrestle it away from all the other regular patrons, we'll try anyway. ;)
Mini-history: This is an Ann Arbor establishment known for their Microbrewery and they brew about 12 different brews throughout the year. I personally go for the shuffleboard and darts, but word has it that the beer is great at happy hour prices. So it's really a "buy local" thing with this, unlike Bar Louie last week.
Instead of the usual long-er and boring text that I write to convince you to come, I'm going to make this more interactive with a presentation tool that seems to be more fun than powerpoint. Yah, I know, more fun than powerpoint, that's not really telling you much. But in any case, play with it. Feedback is always appreciated and coming to hang out would be even more awesome ('cause that's like feedback + results all rolled up in one).
Happy Hour Promo (This is BYOS [Bring Your Own Soundtrack])
Just hit the arrow button to advance or make it full-screen (the "More" button on the bottom right side of the thing) and click. If that promo isn't enough to convince you to want to come, I'm going to have to resort to more drastic measures.
This survey is mostly so I can get feedback from you to make this all better. (It's 4-9 questions, most are scales/checkboxes, 4 required)
In more charitable news, Women in Health Leadership (WiHL), would like you all to know that they're doing a Speed Dating thing to fundraise for "Girls on the Run of Southeast Michigan." ( http://www.girlsontherunsemi. org/ ) Unfortunately for my single straight female fans, the registration has been closed for the straight ladies. The registration remains open for anyone but the straight female at this time. Translation: Males & all LGBT are welcome and encouraged to sign up. For those of you that are professionally minded, this is a great way to practice your elevator speech.
Anyway, sign up for the speed dating thing below for a meagerly $20 (a bargain for multiple [albeit speedy] dates, if you think about it) and you're helping preteen girls build character, self-esteem, physical & mental & spiritual well-being, and self-efficacy (am I using this right?) through taking up running. Though I'm sure WiHL would gladly take any additional donations towards this cause or WiHL in general.
If I don't see you this weekend, have a great MLK weekend and share the wealth of diversity!

1/6/11 First SPH Happy Hour of the Decade -- 4-8:30 PM Bar Louie
Hi SPHers,
I know, it's been 3-4 long weeks of finals and winter vacation and you wish vacation should be at least twice as long as time spent studying and taking finals. Or you're really excited to get back together, in which case, great! While you're still kinda in the vacation mode, let's extend that vacation a lil' longer with our very ownSPH Happy Hour, as if you didn't have enough calories over winter break. So, drink in moderation and eat if you feel hungry, but mostly, enjoy the good company 'cause it's too cold in Ann Arbor to be mopping around at home by yourself.
4-8:30 PMBar LouieE. Liberty & S. Division
401 East Liberty Street
Ann Arbor, MI 48104Specials 4-7 PMHalf off AppetizersDrink Specials of some sort (dollar off? half off?)(Some of you remember this place, it's halfway to Main St and surrounded by clubs, 'nuff said)
To encourage interdisciplinary participation from all the departments within SPH, I'll make this SPH HappyHour relevant...somehow. Let me try.
Epid and the Biostats have studied this phenomena associated with libations, from them, we know that consumption of alcohol is associated with lower risk of mortality and cardiovascular morbidity. EHS and Toxicology folks recognize that there is some sort of exposure-response curve associated with the alcohol consumption that leads to euphoria and lowered inhibitions (that kinda spells F-U-N). HBHE will, I'm sure, recognize that there's self-efficacy to be found somewhere in all of this. And finally, HMP would love to know what to make of all of this (most likely some form of libertarian-paternalistic approach to get people to hang out, most likely inform & implore, mind you).
There, if you disagree with my assessment of what you guys do, it's 'cause we haven't hung out enough. Also, this is where peer-review happens, you can come out and tell me what evidence I'm not citing (extended vacation mode, no citations, pfft). I'll make another assertion: Happy Hour makes people happy & Happypeople live Happier, therefore, you should come hang out and meet people from other departments. ;) (Unless, of course, you like mopping or hate other departments and don't like interdisciplinary collaboration and networking, then we really need to have a talk)
~Ari
FAQ (mostly excuses, really):
What if I have class tomorrow morning?
It's 4-8:30 PM, you still have plenty of time to go home afterwards and do ALL of your reading and preparation before your FIRST session on Friday.
What if I have class until 8?
Well, come out anyway, a lot of us will still be out somewhere on Main St, I'm sure. I'll even give you my personal cell phone number so you can find us: (number removed) And seriously, that's messed up to have class 'til that late.
What if I have another happy hour to go to?
Why not come hang with us? And bring your people so we can meet them, too!
What if I've already got fatty liver (hepatosteatosis) from all the drinking and eating over vacation?
Then, I would STRONGLY encourage you to drink water and eat salad while you're out with us.
I don't like the taste of alcohol and it's cold, why should I come out?
'cause it's warm inside with good company and food and they serve soft drinks, too.
But I have yoga, why do you have it at the same time?
You can still make it after, none of us will notice the sweat over food and drinks and good company. And this is when Happy Hours happen...
Why are you sending this at 2 in the morning?
'cause I value your company at Happy Hour and hope you can read this before you head off to class in the morning. Yah, that's an 'Aww' moment, everyone.

12/7/2010 SPH Happy Hour - Multiple Locations - 5:30 PM - 2 AM; Thursday, Dec 9
My beloved SPHers,
This is a truly comprehensive email to inform you of the details of our end of semester Happy Hour at least 36 hours prior to the event for those of you that want to plan your Thursday events that far in advance. Due to some requests for a full itinerary of the night so people can join us later 'cause of classes (excuses that people have used for not showing up at prior Happy Hours, you know who you are), I have included two HappyHour schedules. As we're grad students now, I've also included references and citations and show you how you could, but probably really shouldn't, pad your own "works cited" with self-citations.
Just so you know, we will start with the highest quality beer first, then the night goes downhill in quality of beer and locale. Speaking of highest quality, Ashley's has just recently started the tap on the Great Lakes Christmas Ale, rumored to be the, I quote, "best use of grain and water since bread (1)." So, it's an easy decision that we'll start the evening off there. You may remember Ashley's from prior SPH Happy Hours such as the 11/4/2010 and 11/11/2010 SPH Happy hours (2, 3). Awesome beer, best time you've ever had/missed, yadda yadda yadda.
Then, we will go to either Cottage Inn for a MHESA Holiday Party (which you may have RSVPed for before Dec 2, 2010) or to Blue Lep for the AMA/AMSA/UAEM Paint the Town Red Grad Student Mixer(4, 5). But most likely, we will be at Blue Lep after the MHESA Holiday Party until midnight. You may remember Blue Lep from the Health Professions Mixer on 10/21 (6). After midnight, given our location at South U by that point, Rick's is only the logical choice, I'll explain in a sec. Here are the schedules:
Schedule A (RSVPed for MHESA party):
5:30-7 PM Ashley's -- SPH Happy Hour Start (basement with foosball if no room upstairs)
7-9 PM Cottage Inn -- MHESA Holiday Party
9-12 AM Blue Lep -- AMA/AMSA/UAEM Grad Student Mixer
12-2 AM Rick's American Café -- Debauchery? or just amusement =P
Schedule B (all others):
5:30-8 PM Ashley's -- SPH Happy Hour Start (basement with foosball if no room upstairs)
8-12 AM Blue Lep -- AMA/AMSA/UAEM Grad Student Mixer
12-2 AM Rick's American Café -- Debauchery? or just amusement =P
Please join us at any time during the night! I can assure you that the Grad Students in AMA/AMSA/UAEM are people that care about health care and have plenty in common with us. In fact, with this many aspiring health professionals in one place, you can be sure that CPR isn't going to be an issue, but alcoholic hepatitis, on the other hand...
Finally, for those of you that haven't been to Rick's American Cafe, allow me to share some Yelp! reviews, pictures, and a link; mostly so you can get an appreciation of what people mean when they say Rick's in Ann Arbor.
- "If you like the whole, lets cram into a basement with no cell phone service and get wasted scene, this is all you!"
- "This place reminds me of drunken, impromptu dances parties in the basements of frat houses. Smells weird, Everclear a-flow'in, disgusting bathrooms that make you [wish] you packed a body condom to wear and just crawling with ridiculously bad dancers humping the air."
- "I was dragged into Rick's with the promise of dollar beers. Oh, Rick's delivered that and ohso much more."
- "Some of the best nights of my life started/ended/partially happened at this bar."
- "It's so icky in there, one would think you'd get gonorrhea just by touching the bar stool."
Rick's American Café in Ann Arbor should not be confused with the MUCH classier Rick's Café Américain in the famous 1940s film, Casablanca.
If you want to see how long the line outside of this establishment is, you can look at the following link so you can, I don't know, laugh at scantily dressed people standing in the winter cold?
Just so you can remember how consistent we have been with our Happy Hours (we only took a break for Thanksgiving). I've included the past schedule to show you what you've been a part of or missed over the semester. ;) And if I don't see you around this last time, hopefully your schedule next semester will work out better.

Hi SPHers,
Tomorrow is Thursday and not a holiday, so we will resume our regular scheduling of SPH Happy Hours. This week is special because this week you can make it to 3 events in one night without having to weigh the pros and cons of each one.
Yoga at SPH Community Room at 6:15 PM
Ice Skating at Yost Arena at 8 PM
Happy Hour at Packard Pub at about 10 PM
Just so you can burn off all the calories before you partake in pub food or beer. The choice of Packard Pub is not exactly based on quality of the atmosphere, food, or beers available at this location like our prior SPHHappy Hours. This is chosen solely based upon it being the only bar within a decent walking distance of the arena in the snow tomorrow. But, of interest and perhaps all the more reason for some of you to go, reviews on Yelp indicated the following:
- "If Rick's were a bar / It would be called Packard Pub / And not much would change"
- "The decor is what my uncle's basement looks like: one huge superfan bachelor pad."
- "a bajillion TVs all tuned to the same game, waitresses (no waiters) in referee outfits, $6 pitchers of lousy beer, and food served in paper-lined baskets."
But regardless, like all previous SPH Happy Hours, it'll be a grand time of socializing.
After Ice Skating (10 PM) until whenever

Hi SPHers,
Thanks for the great turnout last week at Ashley's! It was great to see all of you there, we even ran out of room at Ashley's but we had managed to take over the front area. Good work team! This week, we're going to go to a nearby location by heading a lil' farther north on State St. We will check out Sava's!
This is a chic location commonly known for its excellent brunch and PBR in a wine glass and live music at night along with outdoor seating. There's even a sign saying, "Don't mind the crane outside!" You can't miss the crane on State St being used to construct the new CVS.
Would love to see you guys all there! I know some departments have just finished a really rough week and couldn't make it out to last week's happy hour. This week is your chance to make up and represent your department and meet new people that you see running around SPH but wish you had more time to talk to.
We might be upstairs or in the bar area, ie. don't give up if you can't find us at first.

Hi SPHers,
Alright, we're going to do things a lil' differently this week because the weather is gloriously gorgeous, the days are getting shorter, it's Veteran's Day, AND a portion of the regular SPH Happy Hour crowd just finished a major midterm. We are starting at 3 PM.
This is mainly so we can carve out a whole front and middle section of Ashley's to be exclusively SPH and so everyone can mingle and enjoy good company. I know quite a few of you missed out on last week's SPHHappy Hour at Ashley's due to the Reaching Excellence Symposium or other reasons, so we're going to repeat this offering to make up for last week. As always, we would love to see new faces!
Please refer to the previous email last week for why Ashley's is an awesome hangout, even for non-beer drinkers.

11/4/10 SPH Happy Hour - Ashley's -- 5-8 PM
Hi SPHers,
It's that same Bat time, but different Bat place. We're changing it up a lil' bit based on a few suggestions by people that haven't been able to make it, but would love to make it. There's still a lot of you that the regular crowd would love to meet!
We're going to try this at Ashley's this week. If you haven't been to Ashley's, this is an Ann Arbor establishment that has 70 beers on draft at any time with rotating taps with over 200 varieties of beers throughout the year. Food is also decent with vegetarian options, too! It even has a jukebox in the middle of the pub! But really, it'll be a great place to socialize with your fellow classmates (the beer is really just a plus for beer-lovers, there's a good selection from non-alcoholic soft drinks to sophisticated single-malt Whiskeys).
